State Street Global Advisors Appoints SPDR COO, UK Head Of Consultant Relations

The asset management arm of New York-listed State Street has made two senior appointments in the UK.

State Street Global Advisors has appointed Malcolm Smith to the newly created role of global SPDR chief operating officer.

Smith, a 30-year industry veteran, was most recently interim global COO in the global investments and solutions division of Barclays Wealth and Investment Management. He previously served as global COO for M&G Real Estate and European COO at Barclays Global Investors, where he helped lead the European iShares business. Smith spent the early part of his career at PwC as principal and head of the firm’s investment management consultancy practice.

Based in London, Smith will be responsible for leading all aspects of the operating infrastructure for SSGA’s global SPDR exchange-traded fund business. He will report to Rory Tobin, co-head of the global SPDR business.

“Malcolm’s considerable domain knowledge and experience in both asset management and exchange traded funds will be instrumental to developing and strengthening our SPDR ETF business. We are delighted to welcome Malcolm to SPDR and look forward to working with him as we enhance our position as a leader in the global ETF industry,” said Tobin.

Separately, SSGA has appointed Peter Brackett as its UK head of consultant relations.

He joins from European asset manager Amundi, where he was head of global consultant relations. Prior to this, he was responsible for building the UK institutional business of American Century Investments and was also co-head of global consultant relations at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. Earlier in his career, he held investment consultancy roles at Aon Investments and Towers Watson.

In his new role, he will head up the team responsible for SSGA's UK-based consultant partnerships, which assists defined benefit and contribution pension plans to achieve their objectives.

“This appointment recognises the high value we place on our engagement and relationship with the consultant community,” said Mike Karpik, head of Europe, Middle East and Africa at SSGA. “We are confident that our relationships will continue to grow and flourish under Peter’s leadership.”

WealthBriefing is awaiting confirmation as to whether Brackett takes on a newly-created role or replaces someone.

SSGA’s assets under management totalled $2 trillion as of 30 September 2016.
