Who’s Moving Where In Wealth Management? – Burges Salmon, Farrer & Co, Others

The latest moves and appointments in wealth management in the UK, the rest of Europe, the Middle East and other select locations.

Burges Salmon
Independent UK law firm Burges Salmon has appointed private client partner Suzanna Harvey as the new head of its private wealth sector area.

Harvey specialises in tax, trusts, immigration and estate planning for international clients (both UK resident and non-resident) and provides tax advice to a wide range of clients, from ultra-high net worth individuals to leading private banks and other financial institutions. She regularly advises clients considering moving to the UK on their immigration options and has wide-ranging experience of advising non-UK domiciliaries on the income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax implications of UK residence.

Harvey also provides trust advice to numerous international trust companies and individuals, including drafting trust documentation, advising on general trust law issues and advising on policy documentation.

“Private wealth is one of the key growth areas for our firm and, with her many years’ experience and wealth of expertise, Suzanna is very well placed to take over the leadership of the team and further enhance its highly regarded reputation and profile in the market," Roger Bull, Burges Salmon’s managing partner, said:

With 22 partners, 100 lawyers and a total cross-firm team of 124, Burges Salmon has one of the largest dedicated private wealth teams in the UK. It has lawyers based in Bristol, London and Edinburgh and offers clients "genuine strength-in-depth" across multiple practice areas including corporate, real estate, dispute resolution and technology.

Farrer & Co
Law firm Farrer & Co has elected Jeremy Gordon as its new senior partner. Previously head of the disputes team, Gordon will be formally appointed senior partner on 1 May 2023. He will be taking over the reins from Anne-Marie Piper, who is going to retire.

A priority for the firm is expanding its international reach and advising clients around the world from its London office.

Since joining Farrer & Co in 1989, Gordon has established his reputation as an expert in contentious trusts and estates. He has been involved in some of the highest-profile trusts disputes of recent years, and over the course of his career has worked in most of the leading trust jurisdictions, both onshore and offshore.

During her tenure as senior partner, Piper led Farrer & Co through a period of growth, with profits increasing by 38 per cent and headcount rising by 24 per cent. In a career spanning over 30 years, she played a defining role in establishing charity law as a specialist legal discipline and developed strength and depth within the firm’s market-leading charities practice, the firm said.

Gordon said: “I would like to thank Anne-Marie on behalf of the whole firm for her dedicated leadership over the last six years. Embodying a firm that provides a world-class service to clients is central to the senior partner role, but for Anne-Marie the wellbeing of our staff and recognition of our business services teams were a particular passion.

“Farrer & Co is one of the oldest law firms in the world, yet it is innovative and thoroughly modern in its outlook. It is this exciting and unique mix of heritage, with its emphasis on integrity and unrivalled client service, and its forward-looking dynamism which makes everyone within the firm so proud to work here. It is the greatest privilege to be its next senior partner. Anne-Marie leaves an outstanding legacy, and I look forward to building on her excellent work.”

Commenting on Jeremy’s election to senior partner, Piper, said: “I am delighted that Jeremy has been chosen as my successor. His appointment is testament both to the exceptional calibre of his work, and to his commitment to all of us at the firm. Jeremy brings experience, and the greatest commitment to the role and truly understands the special qualities which set Farrer & Co apart. The firm could not be in better hands.

"It has been a huge privilege to serve as senior partner at Farrer & Co for the last six years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure and feel very fortunate to have worked with so many fantastic colleagues and clients throughout my time at the firm. I look forward to seeing Farrer & Co go from strength to strength under Jeremy’s leadership.”

Stonehage Fleming
Stonehage Fleming, the international multi-family office, has appointed Ed Hawthorne as director of Stonehage Fleming Dealing and Treasury Services (Jersey) Limited, with immediate effect.

Hawthorne will be based in Jersey and will report directly to Stefan Flachsmann, Stonehage Fleming’s Global Head of Financial Services.

Hawthorne will be taking over from Graeme Gill who has decided to step down as head of treasury services in April to assume a senior relationship manager role within Stonehage Fleming Group Financial Services.

“We are extremely happy to be able to retain Graeme and his vast knowledge for this new role within Stonehage Fleming. We would like to thank him for all his efforts, commitment and passion in developing and growing Stonehage Fleming Dealing and Treasury over the last 9 years," Flachsmann said.

Hawthorne has more than 15 years’ experience in finance and treasury operations and dealing. He is joining from Atrium European Real Estate where he was group head of treasury. Prior to that, he was senior treasury manager at CPA Global and treasury manager at MatchesFashion.com.

Welcoming Hawthorne, Flachsmann said: “It is a pleasure to welcome Ed to Stonehage Fleming and we look forward to him bringing a fresh perspective to ensure effective strategic and practical management of Stonehage Fleming Treasury. His experience will be invaluable to the group as we continue to support many of the world’s leading families and wealth creators across generations and geographies.”

Suntera Global
Suntera Global has appointed Angela Morris to lead its Jersey corporate team as part of its continuing strategy to enhance the company’s proposition for its corporate client base.

In her new role, she will also be supported by a team which will focus more on expanding the corporate services business, working with colleagues across Suntera’s global network to provide services spanning administration and governance services for corporate clients.

Morris joined Suntera Global in 2018 and was most recently a director within the firm’s Private Wealth division. She has more than 20 years’ experience in cross-border financial services and has worked in senior roles for a number of trust and professional services companies in Jersey. In particular, she has extensive knowledge of working with corporate clients as well as high net worth families.

She is an Associate Member of the Chartered Governance Institute.

Morris’s appointment coincides with a sizeable increase in Suntera’s book of corporate business, including in the real estate, natural resources and digital spaces; the latter is an area where the firm is anticipating increased growth this year, it said.
