Stating darkly that some such unauthorised firms operate ‘boiler rooms’ (where fraudsters cold-call investors offering them worthless, overpriced or even non-existent shares), the FCA exhorts would-be investors to check the often-wonky Financial Services Register site before believing that any firm they come into contact with is conducting legitimate business in the UK.
