Chris Hamblin, Editor, London, 31 March 2015
HM Treasury has made some important announcements related to digital currency, most of them to do with policing. Consultative exercises are to begin during the next Parliament, assuming the government stays in power.
The policies in the recent paper promise the following.
- Anti-money-laundering regulation for digital currency exchanges
- £10m towards research into the opportunities and challenges of digital currencies
- A working relationship with the British Standards Institution and the digital currency industry on voluntary standards
- An investigation of effective digital currency skills, tools and legislation for law enforcement including the ability to seize and confiscate digital currencies used for criminal purposes.
